To market, to market…now is the time for gorgeous produce, both in the northern and southern hemispheres. If you are headed into summer, spend some time learning about new varieties of vegetables or greens you may be unfamiliar with, like Asian herbs or heirloom tomatoes and beets. Look for early-picked vegetables for small plate garnishes or sprigs of new growth berries, lettuces, or apple blossoms. Farmer's markets or CSAs (community supported agricultural farms) are wonderful sources for unexpected finds. If you are on the heels of fall, start thinking about harvesting those hardy fall herbs-savory, thyme, lemon verbena, and sweet woodruff will hold for weeks refrigerated in a covered plastic container with a few slightly damp paper towels on top. Even with woody stems they make lovely long-lasting garnishes, extending the growing season as much as possible.
