Upon our return from a food photography workshop in Australia, we want to share some of what we saw and learned. Once real difference in styling philosophy we discussed revolved around the use of anything non-edible or "fake". Our Aussie counterparts completely eschew any artificial crutches when styling their food, no matter whether it's for still photo or film/television. No brown paint for flowing rivers of melted chocolate in television commercials, no use of glues, sprays, or other products found outside of supermarket shelves. And we agree that if everyone is on board with this, there's no reason to fall back on using anything but the real thing. Our favorite tip: we saw stylists using eucalyptus oil (easily found in health food stores or pharmacies--it's what gives saunas their sinus-opening quality) to remove sticky labels from props or produce. No toxic (and flammable) Goo Gone down under!
